Why Homebirths are Safe

Having your baby at home? Who would even think of such a thing?  Didn’t that only happen back in the early days of our country when doctor’s had to go out to the prairie and deliver babies?

Not so.  There is a large group of women who are discovering the benefts of having a baby at home, or homebirth as it is sometimes called.

The practice of homebirths is usually called midwifery.  Although they are usually not doctors or nurses, people who are in this profession are professionally regulated.  I myself have seen the steady rise of homebirths through my practice as a San Diego certified midwife.

The people, generally women, who perform this line of work are called homebirth midwives.  Midwives is the term most people are familiar with and means a person who helps during childbirth by providing support of the labor and delivery.

Now why the midwife generally isn’t a doctor or nurse is because having your baby at home, or midwifery, is usually the belief that pregnancy and delivery are natural events.  This is contrasted with the medical model which believes that pregnancy and delivery should be accompanied by medicine to assist and improve the situation.

That out of the way, lets take a look at why women are having their babies at home.  What are the benefits that are causing women to have homebirths?

First, when you have a midwife present, this can cause the time of labor to be reduced.  Most women aren’t told that pain medications actually slows down the labor, even though it helps with the pain.  This actually creates more pain and makes the labor last longer.

Second, the techniques of midwifery actually reduces the likelihood of the need for forceps or other operative devices during delivery.  The process of allowing the birth and delivery to happen naturally is what reduces the need for those devices.

Third, cesarean delivery possbilities are reduced.  Most c-sections happen when during labor, it was thought that a natural birth process was not possible.  Either it was the baby’s safety that was in mind or the mother’s safety.  Well in reality, complications were caused when the natural process was stopped and not allowed to continue.

These were 3 benefits of having a homebirth naturally.  There are plenty more benefits, but most women would agree for pregnancy these are 3 huge benefits.

So although, most might consider it strange to want to have a child at home, studies have shown that allowing the natural birth process to happen is safer for the mother and the baby.  With over 300 births attended as a homebirth midwife in San Diego, this has proven to be the case time and time again.

Should You Buy A Baby Monitor?

It is scientifically proven that a mother is attuned to the sound of her baby crying. This can be at any time of day or night, no matter how tired she is, right? Wrong! Sometimes, especially during those early months of the baby’s life, both parents are usually exhausted. This normally means that as soon as they fall asleep, they will go into a deep slumber, due to their lack of sleep. Baby monitors are normally a good way to ensure that if their baby cries, you will be able to hear and respond accordingly.

A lot of parents will invest in a baby monitor, especially if their infant’s bedroom is far away from their own, or at least out of earshot. Most people think that they only need baby monitors if their child’s bedroom is far away from their own, but this is not necessarily true! During the deepest moments of sleep, there may be moments when your baby cries and you do NOT hear it!

Another valid reason to invest in a good baby monitor is because you could be watching TV, or talking. Its true that most people will still be able to hear their baby crying, but there are always times when it can be missed.

If you have your baby monitor on at all times, you may find that you start reacting to every little sound that your baby makes. Baby monitors are very useful, but they can also be a little bit inconvenient. Remember that if your baby is not screaming at the top of its lungs, but is only making weird grunts and moans, it is probably still sleeping peacefully. Parents tend to react and respond to the first squeak out of their baby, when it is really not necessary. In time you will become used to your baby’s cries and which ones you should be worrying about and responding to.

Baby food recipes should be kept as simple as possible. This will ensure the best health and nutrition for your baby. Try to include as many foods as possible to ensure variety and get your baby used to the taste of different foods. Do remember though that some of the foods us adults enjoy will not be good for baby because there are certain foods that are unsafe for babies to eat.

For example, salt is not something that you want to give to a baby. In large doses this can lead to many health problems. Honey is another potential problem food. It has been known to cause botulism in babies under a year old. Never give a baby peanut butter or any other nuts. Peanuts can cause severe allergies which can be fatal and nuts may choke a small child.

For making your own baby food you will only need a few items. Plastic storage bags and a marker, ice cube trays and a food processor are all you’ll need to get started.

Keep all ingredients natural when creating your recipes- organic is even better. Also make sure the food is as fresh as possible. When buying fruits and vegetables, look for those that are currently in season. Generally this produce is purchased and sold in large volume, ensuring that you get the freshest, and cheapest, product available. Or, why try not growing your own?

When preparing fruits and vegetables, all you’ll need to do is wash peel, de-seed and blend to achieve the right consistency. Some fruits and vegetables contain less moisture however and you may need to add some extra water. For some of these vegetables containing less water, potatoes, sweet potatoes and certain varieties of squash for example, you may want to add a small amount of formula or breast milk. This same method works quite well with bananas.

As far as meats and casseroles go, you will simply prepare the same meal you are preparing for the rest of the family. Be aware of added salt when you’re doing this however and omit it while cooking. Run the babies portion of this meal through the food processor with a small amount of water, breast milk or formula until you achieve the desired consistency. It’s a good idea to process enough for more than one meal and freeze the left overs for future meals.

Simply place the left overs in an ice cube tray and freeze. When solid the cubes can be stored in containers in the freezer until needed. Don’t forget to mark the container with the date and ingredients!.

Homemade baby food is a fantastic choice for you and your baby. It is very cost effective and doesn’t take much time to prepare. At the same time you’ll be ensuring your baby recieves a healthy nutritious meal. Just remember to keep your baby food recipes as simple and natural as possible.

Everybody loves to receive free stuff. Especially when it’s free stuff that you would buy in the store anyhow, only now you’re just getting it for free.

This is even more true, when it’s free baby coupons.

About half a year ago I found a baby offer on the internet that said something like “Sign up and get free diapers”. I clicked on the add and filled out a simple form, entered my information and that was it. I received an email that told me that my free diapers were being shipped to me. I had no idea what to expect, but I was pretty sure that I would get one or two diaper samples for my baby to try.

A few weeks later I received a package from Huggies in the mail containing 10 diapers and  several baby coupons for $ 5 off my next purchases. All of this I got for a few minutes of my time, filling out a simple questionaire and on top of this I didn’t even have to pay for the shipping.

With my thirst for getting more free stuff heightened I took to the internet and started browsing the internet for baby freebies and to my surprise there were so many freebie offers, sweepstakes and other really useful coupons that you can get for free. I guess that when you fall into whatever demographic that a certain company is looking for, they’re willing to send you a bunch of freebies in the hope that you’ll tell your friends and family about how much you love the product and how useful it is… and you know what, that actually is often the case, so I guess everybody wins.

It happens that the companies that send you your free baby stuff ask for your feedback. It’s optional, but I like go in and tell them what I think of their product, since they’ve been nice to me (as long as it doesn’t take overhand) and often I end up getting even more coupons and offers.

If you’re like me and like to start getting baby coupons and other free baby stuff sent to your mailbox, then I ‘ll give you the following advice. There are so many baby offers online and so much information that it’s easy to get lost. What I do is find a few quality websites that have several offers and then just bookmark these sites and join their mailing list or RSS feed and then they do all the hard work of finding the offers and just send it to my mailbox. Enjoy.

Two essentials to look for in bedding for your baby are safety and warmth. When selecting a bedding set for your baby, your best choice is something that is comprised entirely of cotton. Remember there is a wide variety of baby beds, and different types have different bedding needs, so be careful when making a decision.

One type of bed that has really taken off for new babies is Moses baskets. Because they can’t support the weight of an older baby, they’re only used forn4 or 5 months. They are ideal for times that you want to keep your baby close to you and you are not in your usual location. Pediatricians recommend removing soft bedding, such as pillows and blankets, from bassinets.

Cradles, though very similar in function to cribs, are usually tinier and do not stand as high. The rockers on the bottom of a cradle may help your baby easily fall asleep. Usually between 4 to 7 months, at the time a baby is able to sit up on his/her own, the baby begins sleeping in a crib.

A baby should sleep in a crib until he/she is between 12 to 18 months. There is a wide variety of cribs to choose from, what you should always remember is that you want one that is strong and will last a long time. A portable crib is more expensive than the standard variety, but it is invaluable if you intend to travel with your baby. A convertible crib is also a great option. Most often convertible cribs can be also used as toddler beds, offsetting the more expensive initial cost. When it comes to baby cribs, it is always wise to buy from a trustworthy manufacturer.

Baby blankets are important, thus parents should consider the softness and toxicity of any blankets they are purchasing for their baby. Modern fabrics mean that there is a wide choice of blankets which are soft and smooth enough for a baby, and which come in a range of colors.

Crib sets can be specific to the sex of the baby, but you can also get ones that are suitable for both boys and girls. There are some color combinations and cartoon characters for baby beds which can be bought for baby boy as well as baby girl. Although some unisex options of baby bedding are available, most pastel sets are designed for girls, and the darker, bolder sets are intended for boys. Nothing is set in stone, a lot of bedding sets are not gender specific and good for both boys and girls.

Babies don’t care if their parent choose suitable colors. They just like something cheerful, pleasant, and fresh. As a child ages, though, a boy may feel uncomfortable with a bed dressed in pinks and pastels. Because baseball is more often associated with boys at a young age than girls, we can assume that most girls would not get much out of a room that had a baseball theme.

The sheer number of bedding options available for babies can be a bit overwhelming. The great selection of merchandise can ensure you can find exactly what it is you desire. However, when you are simply out looking, all the different colors, types, fabrics and extras can overwhelm you. Planning ahead is the best solution to making a budget. Removing the distraction of bedding sets that are too expensive helps define what you are looking for.

If it is girl, then it is pink. Choose pink baby bedding for your little girl. It is always the colour used for many themes including fairies, ballerinas, butterflies and flowers. Now, she is too young to tell you what she likes or doesn’t like, so pick a theme you’ll be pleased with. You should remember that the baby’s room is as much for you as it is for her.

Before shopping always set a budget – and try to purchase needful items. It is prudent to plan before we start shopping. Pink bedding for babies is wonderful. There are an astounding number of choices at any price point.

In your daughter’s room one indispensable item is girl baby bedding. There are ever so many matching accessories which can pull  the design together. For a functional nursery they are unnecessary. First comes the necessities and then the accessories! You may save money buy buying bedding in sets, they usually include, blanket, sheet, and a bumper pad. Items such as dust ruffles, diaper stacker, picture frames, window valances or mobiles will be included in larger sets.

The baby bedding sheets should be 100% cotton. Although there is a myriad of fabric choices when choosing a baby blanket, yet baby blankets made of fleece are advised since they are soft, comfortable, and hypoallergenic. Let’s face it: babies’ diapers leak. While mattress pads are optional, they are certainly recommended as they will be useful in protecting in the case of an accident.

Currently, the ideas regarding baby bumpers is quite diverse, so consider what is necessary for your own satisfaction. If bumpers are there to protect the baby from rapping her head or getting limbs through the side rails of crib. All bumper pads and loose blankets should be removed from cribs due to a high risk of suffocation of newborns. When your daughter grows sufficiently to roll over and move, there is not much risk of hard breathing. But bumper pads are needed to avoid any injury.

Go in for pink cotton bedding for 100% machine washing and resistance to fading when compared to red and black colors. To protect your baby’s skin use mild and non-fragrant detergents on all crib sets. Be sure that the crib is comfortable! Your baby will spend about 70% of his time in the crib.

Most people prefer pink for their baby girls but it is certainly not the only option. If you choose to go for a modern look rather than pastels, then opt for Trend Lab’s Maya crib set. Many beautiful baby girl bedding sets have no pink at all!

Organic foods have become more popular in recent years as the public has become more informed of the health risks posed by some of the chemicals and methods that are used in traditional farming and ranching. There are many different reasons to buy organic foods, and each person is different in choosing to go in this direction. For some people, it is the desire to eat in a healthier manner, free of additives or preservatives. For other people, the reason they buy organic food is to promote the humane treatment of animals. Regardless of the reasons behind the choice, there are a multitude of benefits to the individual buying the organic foods, as well as to the environment that is impacted by the organic food production and sales.

Benefits

One reason to buy organic food is that these farmers and ranchers have agreed to submit to certain standards of production set by the government as to what makes foods organically grown. These producers refuse to use any additives and preservatives to their produce or meats. They also do not use any hormones or antibiotics in their meat production or dairy production, which makes them healthier for the individuals who consume them, especially children. Another reason to buy organic foods is that there are not any synthetic chemicals that are used to grow the foods, such as fertilizers or pesticides. These farmers use other natural methods of farming to keep the land healthy for the crops to grow and to keep the pests off the crops. In addition, there are no genetically altered plants or animals used in organic foods, making them a better choice for individuals.

Another good reason to buy local organic foods is that it helps to support the local farming and ranching community which has a hard time competing with the mega-farms and ranches. Buying locally also saves on the transportation costs and the harm to the environment due to this transportation. The fuel is not needed in transporting the organic foods, nor is the packaging material needed, so the environment is saved on two fronts by buying from local vendors. There are also reasons to buy organic food for the pets in the home, since cheap pet foods use vegetable and meat meals in them, which mean that it is the waste material that is left after these foods are produced for human consumption. The waste materials do not have many nutrients in them, which leaves the pets deprived of all the nutrients that they need.

Is Your Infant Bedding Set Risky?

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) claims the lives of over 6000 babies yearly, with more than 900 of these deaths caused by soft crib bedding sets. Is the plave where your baby sleeps at night not a danger to her?

Suffocation can occur with the use of soft baby bedding, particularly when baby is on her belly and her head depresses the mattress. Plush mattresses provide maximum comfort for babies but are a safety threat as well. Infants should be supervised at all times and be given the best care to avoid deadly accidents.  For example, special care should be taken when placing an infant a crib with a soft mattress so that suffocation does not occur.

parents can select a baby nursery bedding with a firm mattress that does not get depressed easily when some weight is being applied on it in order to avoid accidents. By applying force to a certain mattress one can actually feel it resisting the weight and it’s actually one way of discovering the mattress strength. The more resistant a mattress, the safer it is.

Bumper pads in baby cribs pose a threat of suffocation. There is no doubt that the colors and designs are attractive but many recommend removing them from the crib as an infant who falls asleep with their tiny mouth up against the padding will have their movement and breathing restricted and can potentially suffocate.

Parents should have care and precaution because infants are vulnerable and weak during this period. While some recommend firmer bumper pads, the best option is to remove bumpers from the crib entirely. The reason for this is that there are rare cases of strangulation by the bumper pad strings, and of suffocation between the pads and another object.

In addition, recent research has revealed that there are toxic gases in mattresses that can be detrimental to your baby’s development. Dangerous chemicals have been found to be added to mattresses as fire retardants, but they are dangerous chemical compounds containing phosphorus and arsenic. The chemical compounds present in the mattress when reacts with certain material, then they release toxic gases which is very dangerous for the baby, if the baby inhales a large amount of it while sleeping.

It’s ironic but the fungus sometimes found in a baby’s bedding, that we thought is harmful, is actually the one helping to release poisonous gases according to some findings. Parents are thus urged not to use old nursery and crib bedding which has been used before, as it may contain fungus after a long period of time. Babies crib bedding should not be reused from one baby to another because old bedding can carry fungus. Besides, new baby nursery bedding will be prettier and more personalized than an old, reused one anyway.

In addition, there is some concern about synthetic fabric in baby bedding sets. While there is no solid proof that synthetic fabrics are harmful to a baby, you may want to stick to natural fibers. There are plenty of stylish cotton baby crib bedding sets available (one of my favorites is the Maya baby crib bedding set), so there is no need to sacrifice style for safety.

Using these guidelines, it should be easy for a parent to determine if their baby’s nursery bedding is safe. One should immediately get a safe mattress bedding, so as to sleep without tension for the baby whole night. Also , the baby can sleep well.

The first baby is a fantastic experience, likewise organizing everything for the child from the first day of his or her life is something that takes time and energy. Initially you may be unable to determine what you want to do for the son or daughter that would be really special. You may want a distinct room for the childyoungster, keep them in every luxury feasible and decorate the room in such a manner that no other son or daughter will have such a room.

I know, that it is your son or daughter and to you nobody is more special than your son or daughter. Hence it becomes a very sad aspect for you when you’re in a circumstance where cash is not that plentiful but you also wish to do the best for your childyoungster. For this reason we have come up with the “re-decorate the baby’s room when your budget is small” program that will assist you fulfill your needs.

The first thing that you will be required to do to do is choose a theme in which you desire to embellish the room. If you know the sex of your infant then it is simple enough, nevertheless, if you are waiting for some surprise then there are numerous other alternatives to select from. To embellish the baby’s room when your funds are tiny you can choose from a wide range of topics for your infant.

You can transform the room into a rain forest or a lake or a sunshine filled meadow even though one of the big issues that you face is space management because you plainly won’t know what furniture you will want to purchase. But I will say: buy only those items that are wholly required for the youngster like a bed, a stroller, and a maclaren pushchair, and do not buy a large closet or things that the baby won’t be able to make use of.

Make a point that the areas are designed in continuation with the theme that you have chosen for your child. If you proceed in this way then you will find that decorating the baby’s room even with a small amount of money can be rewarding. To me, the color in the room and the furnishings are the greatest part and the only one which highlights the final effect.

To impart the finishing touch you can add mirrors and lighting, rugs with letters and numbers on them etc., so that along with play your son or daughter learns early on. Many of these things are also found in a sale so if you look then you will surely obtain what you wish. The final essential thing that I want to talk about is getting the father of the youngster committed at all costs because he ought to be part of what feels like to be a dad. When you’re able produce a infant then you must be aware of how to look after it. Of course it will be a learning experience for him so take him along and don’t worry about the decoration of the nursery even if your budget is low.

Most parents believe there are not many baby activities you can do with your infant up to 3 months old.  While there are not a lot, this is not entirely true and the purpose of this article is provide some baby activities and suggestions during this time period.

While your baby’s senses will not fully develop until about 6 months, she can taste, smell, feel, hear and see to some extent. However, there are still plenty of baby games and activities you can enjoy with your baby. While many of these activities may seem basic or only for enjoyment, they all have a goal to help your baby develop.

Disappearing Toy – You should have a small object or toy that is bright enough that your baby can easily see it.  Have your spouse hold your baby or secure your baby in a seat. Show your baby the toy, then hide it behind your back asking “Where did it go?”. Pop it back out (obviously not so quick to scare your baby!) with a “It’s Here!” Initially, it is better to be predictable so your baby can anticipate the toy’s reappearance.  This game will start building your baby’s memory and cognitive skills.

Pat a Cake – Place you baby down on a bed, blanket, or any other suitable soft surface. Start singing the Pat a Cake song and lightly tap your baby’s palms. When your baby gets to be older than 3 months, you can progress to light clapping!  This is a good game for language and coordination.

Imitation Game – Hold your baby closely or lie him down on a soft flat surface. Be sure to be close enough (8-12 inches) so that he can see you, especially for infants. Face-to-face, start with small movements, like sticking out your tongue or opening your mouth in a wide grin. You may get lucky and your baby will try copying you! Eventually, add larger body motions with your hands or arms. This imitation activity helps with motion coordination and also builds the emotional bond with your infant.

While we do not cover it specifically here, the tummy time baby activity is also a very important for infants.  There are many other baby activities and games you can share with your infant during the 0 to 3 month age period but we hope you give these three a try.  Some of the best and fun baby activites are the most simple.  Above all, make sure you have fun!
